In Our Spot Light

Please Sponsor Baby Gus

 2/25/08

Little Gus is only 3 months old.  This is what happens when amateur owners decide they want to breed their Yorkie without doing the proper research into the pedigrees of the parents.  PLEASE leave the breeding to the professionals!!!

Gus has a Liver Shunt and sadly, not all Liver Shunts are treatable.  He may die before his time.

We will be taking Gus to Purdue to see if he can be fixed.  Updates will follow.  To learn more about Liver Shunts in our precious Yorkie breed, click HERE.

Please help us help him by sending a donation for his medical expenses, they will easily exceed $3000.00.

Little Gus is being fostered in NW Indiana but he is NOT available for adoption at this time.

2/26/08

We were unable to get Gus's records from his breeder's vet so we had to re-run his Bile Acid testing and have confirmed his Liver Shunt.  Gus has an appointment on Monday March 3 at the Purdue Small Animal Hospital for an evaluation and possible surgery.  Surgery will depend on exactly what type of shunt Gus has and on the outside will run us $4000.00

3/3/08

Gus is at the Purdue Small Animal Hospital.  They did an ultrasound and have confirmed his Liver Shunt but they have not yet ruled out MVD.  Four out of five of the liver enzyme tests can back abnormal.  They will consult with the surgeon on Tuesday and then we will know more.

3/4/08

Gus is scheduled for surgery to repair his liver shunt tomorrow, 3/5/08 at 10:30.  We will update the minute we know anything.  Please keep him in your prayers.

Please don't breed or buy while so many die in shelters.
Be a hero, ADOPT don't shop!

ALL IS OK! Thank God!

The surgery went well, he is on track and they are quite pleased. The next few days are critical and he needs to be watched closely. They will call me again in a few hours, I made him swear. He also stated due to the fact that he was asymptomatic upon arrival there he has an excellent chance of a full recovery. They also did a liver biopsy and it will be a few days before we know anything with that as to weather or not he has MVD.

GAWD I am in tears and shaking all over. Please keep him in your prayers.

Gus is still doing well.  He is awake, alert and ate a little.  He will have another ultrasound in the morning to assure all is working properly.  Kudos to his student caregiver who has promised to keep him warm, comfy and give him kisses from all of us!

Thank you to all of our generous supporters and for all the emails and prayers for our little Gus!

3/6/08

YEAH! Gus's ultrasound was perfect! Everything is operating properly and per the student caregiver, the surgery appears to have been a complete success. Thank God! His appetite is good, he is urinating, taking his meds and lactulose just fine and may even get to be discharged tomorrow, Saturday at the latest as long as he stays on this good course!

3/7/08

Gus was discharged this afternoon and is on his way back to his foster home.  Will update more soon!

3/9/08

Gus is doing WONDERFUL.  He is taking his meds very well, is eating his prescription food and is acting like a 3.5 month puppy should.  He is a sweetheart and so full of kisses.  His long incision is healing and he would like nothing more than to play but we need to keep him quiet a bit longer.

3/11/08

Gus's scar is healing very well.  They used glue instead of staples.  Here he is today in all his adorable glory as if nothing ever happened.  He still has a long recovery period and will have his BAT retested in about 6 weeks to assure all is working properly.

3/16/08

Gus is doing quite well and is all settled into his foster home where he is being very pampered and spoiled.  His recovery and monitoring will take several more months so we can assure all continues to work properly.  We will keep the updates coming.

Hi Everybody,

Now that I am feeling a little better I wanted to take a minute and personally thank each and every one of you that helped with my operation. I am not sure what a liver is, but I know that mine does not feel so sick anymore.   I still have to eat special food and take that yucky medicine, but my foster mom says that in a few weeks I have to go to the dogter and if he says I am okay, I may not have to eat that anymore.

My scar is healing really nice, you can barely see it anymore.  All in all, I am doing pretty good!  Okay, I have to go play now but I will keep you updated.

Yorkie Kisses To All!

Sincerely,

Baby Gus

Gus went to the Vet yesterday to have his after surgery Bile Acid Test.  Hopefully, we should have the results back on Monday.  So for now he's still on his prescription food and meds. As if the sweet little boy has not been thru enough already, we have now discovered another genetic disorder, he is cryptorchid and not one, but both of his testicles are retained so we have to have another major surgery. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&articleid=897

PLEASE be certain when purchasing a Yorkie from a breeder, you do your homework and research the pedigrees of the parents.  All that has happened to our sweet little Gus could have been avoided.
