In Our Spot Light

Please HELP Faith

7/21/06  Morning

Doing great here!  We were up from about 3:00 until 4:00, just snuggling, made a potty run, mostly she just needed to be petted and talked to.  Then she went back to sleep until 8:30 this morning.

She ate dry food well, drank a little, took her medicines in cheese (that was good!!!)  She is sitting on my lap right now.  They said she can be out of her crate as long as she is held or lying there, just can’t be walking around.

No baths until staples come out in 10 to 14 days.  She is shaved from the middle of her back to the tip of her tail.  She only has pain medicine for 3 days, so we’ll see what happens after that.  More pictures coming very soon.

Faith is doing well.  She has decided she likes some canned food in with her dry food.  Her appetite is good.  She has started barking when she hears my Yorkies bark.  I think she would be right there running with them if I would let her.  Maybe someday……

She slept all night last night; we didn't have to get up to go potty until 7:00 a.m.   She gets carried outside, then I put her down and she “goes.”  She sort of uses her two front legs to hold herself up, and I try to support her back side by putting my hand under the stomach.  It’s hard to describe, but that’s what the vet instructions said to do, and she really doesn’t have any trouble going.  She’s a little trooper!

Today about noon Faith started getting agitated.  We went back to the hospital; she had pulled one staple loose in her agitation.  She wasn’t crazy or anything, just couldn’t get comfortable, kept whining and crying and trying to move around.

They had to give her gas to do another 2 x-rays; the right leg (the one with just the hip surgery) had lots of soft tissue swelling, but we kind of think the main problem was that her pain medicine was all gone.  She took the last pill last night.  So we have some more of that, and now she is groggy from the gas.  He put sutures in where the staple was and said just keep her as quiet as possible.  That may mean holding her most of the time.  So we’ll see how it goes.  I think she’ll be okay for a few more days with the pain medicine.

Faith had a great day today.  She laid out in the yard for a couple of hours in her x-pen.  She ate breakfast out there and just looked around at everything.  She seems to be feeling much better.  I am trying not to pick her up or move her any more than necessary.  Instead of holding her, I am putting her on the floor by me and she is happy.  She barks when the other dogs bark, and she looks around to see what they are barking at, but she doesn’t try to follow them.

The vet said she could stay out of the crate if she doesn’t try to go up or down stairs (and I don’t have any) and she doesn’t try to roughhouse with the other dogs.  Fortunately, the other dogs can tell she isn’t ready to play yet, and they completely leave her alone.  I did put her in her x-pen when I left for awhile yesterday, and she barked as I went out the door.

She is eating well, dry food mixed with canned food, and she needs to put on a pound or two.  I can see her spine.  She weighs 9.5 lbs, she is pretty long.  Her ears are sticking straight up now; they were laying down before the surgery.  She is a very sweet girl and will make someone a wonderful addition to their family.
