Meet Skylark.  She is around 5 years old and she is one of our Puppy Mill survivors.  She is not as lucky as most of our mill babies.  She was not only bred over and over, she is also full of mammary tumors. Even though her tumor biopsy came back with good results, the best and safest thing we can do for her a radical mastectomy.   This is quite a major surgery for her and our Vet is going to do it one side at a time.  This will give her a much better chance at a long and healthy cancer free life that she would have had if the millers did not get a hold of her.

Mammary Gland Tumors in Dogs and Cats

Quick Facts at a Glance

  • Most common tumor of female dogs
  • Third most common tumor of female cats
  • Very uncommon in male dogs or cats
  • 50% of canine and greater than 80% of feline mammary gland tumors are malignant (cancerous)
  • Adenocarcinoma (ADC) is the most common malignant mammary tumor in dogs and cats
  • Early ovariohysterectomy (spay), prior to the first heat cycle, is protective in both dogs and cats, but has greater benefit in dogs
  • Mammary gland tumors can occur anywhere along the mammary chain
  • Multiple tumors occur in more than 50% of patients
  • Ulcerated tumors or those adherent to the underlying body wall are likely to be malignant
  • 25% of feline mammary tumors are ulcerated

Surgery is over. She is waking up well. It went very well and as it should have. She was attended to by two vets today. I will be going to get her in a couple of hours. Gonna be a very rough couple of days for her but I will of course keep a very close eye on her and be the best nurse possible. She is such a sweet little girl. Please keep her in your prayers.  We still have the other side to do yet.

5/11/08

Skylark had part two of her mastectomy on 5/9/08.  She is recuperating comfortably at her foster home.  To date, all is well so far.
